Abbott Handerson Thayer

One of the artists that I discovered in high school and later as we went to the Smithsonian is Abbott Handerson Thayer. I really like his "ideal figures." Later when I went to the Art Institute of Chicago with Tony, we found this Winged Figure in one of the lower-level galleries. The painting is huge and the colors are fantastic. It's so beautiful and serene. I suppose this is what it's like to "sleep in heavenly peace."

You're right about the rich tones and the serenity depicted in this painting. I have long admired this work from William Blake--the compass initially misled me because I thought lightning was coming from God's fingers. Blake might provide you with further inspiration, Green & Gardenia! He offered us that intriguing yet short verse:

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

William Blake is probably someone I should spend some time on. Thanks, Tyger Tyger burning bright!
