Temple Bookends

When we went to the Nauvoo Pageant last summer, I was moved to hear Pres. Hinckley's voice at the end of it.  This is what he said, "Today, facing west, on the high bluff overlooking the city of Nauvoo, thence across the Mississippi, and over the plains of Iowa, there stands Joseph’s temple, a magnificent house of God. Here in theSalt Lake Valley, facing east to that beautiful temple in Nauvoo, stands Brigham’s temple, the Salt Lake Temple. They look toward one another as bookends between which there are volumes that speak of the suffering, the sorrow, the sacrifice, even the deaths of thousands who made the long journey from the Mississippi River to the valley of the Great Salt Lake."

Michael Coleman

When I was at the Nauvoo Temple a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a beautiful painting and made a note of the artist's name.  Michael Coleman is a prominent Southwestern artist from Utah, and his work is reminiscent of the Hudson River School.  This one is similar to the one in the temple.

Friday Featured Art: Christ in a Red Robe

One thing that was interesting for me to notice at the Nauvoo Temple was that they have Minerva Teichert paintings hanging in the chapel and the hallways. Of course her works are of a much later period than Nauvoo, but I feel like they fit in nicely. This is Christ in a Red Robe.

Nauvoo

We went to Nauvoo over Labor Day, and it was so beautiful. Every time we're there I am so grateful that they rebuilt the temple. It is fabulous.

HomArt

Sorry for the sporadic posting last week! My sister came to visit, and we had a blast - then I flew back to Utah with her to visit my family (including baby James). Tony joined me in Utah and then we flew back to Chicago on Saturday and drove home to Missouri yesterday. Whew!

While Sara was here, we went to Nauvoo for a couple of days. It was beautiful. As a souvenir, I got a bee box made by HomArt. Mine has bees in hexagons with beehive accents. It's kind of hard to explain, but this one's close. I've kind of had a thing for bees lately, being from the Beehive State and all.

The Nauvoo Temple

A wonderful, beautiful place that I like to go is the Nauvoo Temple. It is so amazing to see it restored to its original grandeur. It's a great reminder of the incredible sacrifices of our pioneer ancestors who lived there in the 1840s before embarking on their trek to Salt Lake.
