Friday Featured Art: Winter Feed

Here's a nice northern Utah winter scene by my brother-in-law, Joseph Alleman.  It's a new piece called Winter Feed, and I thought it was perfect for a cold day like today.

Friday Featured Art: Neapolitan Creche

The Art Institute recently acquired a fabulous mid-18th-century creche from Naples.  They're promoting it as the Art Institute's Christmas gift to the city.  I really hope that we'll get downtown to see it before the holidays are over!

Friday Featured Art: Michelle Howard

One day as I was wandering around Pinterest I discovered the artwork of my cousin's wife.  Michelle Howard is a talented artist who works mainly in oil and paints lovely landscapes and such.  I especially like the water-related pieces.  Check out her work here.

Friday Featured Art: Laurent Chehere

I noticed some interesting artwork in Time magazine the other day.  Laurent Chehere creates fantastical photos of flying houses.  I found his work quite fascinating.

I am endlessly inspired by Joe's work.  Every time I check his web site for new paintings there is something fantastic.  I like all of his new pieces (of course), including Lewiston Farmhouse.

Friday Featured Art: Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles

My husband and I were remembering this exhibit the other day but could not remember where we had seen it.  Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles by John Vanderlyn is a set of 19th century oil paintings on display at the Met.  It's so interesting to stand in the middle.

Friday Featured Art: Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives

When we were in Kansas City we saw Frederic Church's Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives at the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum.  It's a lovely painting, and we enjoyed seeing it after visiting Church's home Olana last summer.

Friday Featured Art: Illume

A new art gallery is opening in downtown Salt Lake City today.  Illume will feature works by nationally-known artists, including Joseph Alleman!  It will be neat to be able to see his work when visiting Temple Square.  His new pieces are lovely (as always).

Friday Featured Art: Michael Albrechtsen

Michael Albrechtsen is an artist from Utah who now works at Hallmark.  He painted the murals in the Kansas City temple, and they are so beautiful.  He really captured the beauty of the landscape in that area.  I am really enjoying learning more about his work.  (The painting at the bottom is one of his field studies titled All's Well.)

Friday Featured Art: Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

When we were in Missouri a week ago, we visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.  We had only been there once before and just remembered that it was a small museum with some nice Asian art.  So we were pleasantly surprised to discover that they have a really great collection.  I'll have to share some pieces in the coming weeks, but many of you may already know some of their most famous works - the huge shuttlecocks that adorn the lawn.

Friday Featured Art: Jay Paul Bell

I recently learned of a local artist named Jay Paul Bell.  His landscapes of northern Illinois are spot on.  This is pretty much exactly what it looks like around here.

Friday Featured Art: Greater Love Hath No Man

I was fascinated by this painting when I saw it in the Ensign.  Casey Childs is working on a diptych of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.  This half is finished and is called Greater Love Hath No Man.  It depicts the scene in the bedroom of Carthage Jail.  The other half will show the scene outside the door.  I spent time at Carthage last month, so I find this portrait especially riveting. 

Friday Featured Art: Stamen Maps

I think I found this on Pinterest...  Stamen's web site allows you to type in a place and then select a beautiful watercolor image of a map to print.  This is Paris.

Friday Featured Art: Winter Quarters

My sister drove back home with me from Utah - only sisters can be happy together for four days on the road!  On our journey we stopped at Winter Quarters near Omaha.  There is a beautiful monument in the Pioneer Cemetery there, designed by Avard Tennyson Fairbanks.  I had forgotten how lovely his work is.

Friday Featured Art: Manti Temple Murals

I have not been to the Manti Temple, but I'm starting to think that I need to plan a visit.  Apparently they have murals by C.C.A. Christiansen AND Minerva Teichert.  This is a sketch by Teichert for one of the walls (borrowed from here).  The color looks so amazing.

Friday Featured Art: Shadows and Rows

My bro-in-law, Joseph Alleman, has some new pieces available through the galleries that represent him.  This one is an oil called Shadows and Rows.  I know it's because I'm a Western girl at heart, but I really love his work.

Friday Featured Art: Legion of Honor

I made a big mistake by not writing down any information about this painting, but it's one that I really liked at the Legion of Honor art museum in San Francisco.  I guess I'll have to do some research...

Friday Featured Art: Garden of Earthly Delights

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that I saw a picture of Victoria Beckham wearing this Carven skirt, and it fascinated me.  It's such an interesting idea to use art - literally - as fashion.  Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights is always one of the strangest pieces that one comes across in an art class, but I think it translated well to an article of clothing.

Friay Featured Art: William S. Rice

William S. Rice was another artistic discovery that resulted from our trip to San Francisco.  He was a woodblock print artist who worked in the Arts and Crafts style.  Here's a beautiful print that he made of Yosemite.  I love mountains at night.

Friday Featured Art: Henry Evans

I have a few more things to note from our trip to San Francisco...  At the San Francisco Botanical Garden, we saw some lovely flower prints by Henry Evans.  I liked the California poppies (top).  The bottom picture is ranunculus and cornflowers.  (I'm pretty sure that my husband has a Henry Evans somewhere in his ancestry.)
